1) WORLDS 2002 QUALIFICATION SCHEME (reprinted from 5/16/01 fleet e-mail, and summer '01 Y's Up class newsletter)
With increased interest among American teams in attending the Worlds, we now need a formal qualification scheme. With input from the US Sailing Team coach and class liaison, and others, I've come up with the following. We've tried to spread the regattas out both geographically and across the season. I welcome your feedback on it, which will help improve the system for 2003.
Please see IYA championship rules for details on how the Worlds quota system works (yngling.org/guide.html). I expect 8 (7 quota + 1 all-female) berths at the 2002 Worlds. We will qualify the 7 from regattas, and select the all-female berth from the US Sailing Team.
Top finishers from designated regattas qualify (and are then not counted in later qualification regattas). If a qualifier declines his or her berth for Worlds 2002 at any time, then all the qualifiers are re-selected, starting at the season's first event.
If we get more berths than 7, then we will qualify more people from NAs, since that is our main event. Also, if a qualifying regatta is not sailed, then we will qualify more from NAs.
The one women's boat berth will be given to a member of the 2002 US Sailing Team. I believe that the Team's 2002 Yngling ranking is based on the Miami OCR and either the Thompson Regatta or the Miami ranking regatta [but check with US Sailing to confirm].
The qualifier regattas, with number of boats qualified from each, are:
3: NAs, Newport, R.I., July 10-12
1: Great Lakes Champs, Alpena, Mich., Aug 4-5
1: CORK, Kingston, Ontario, Aug 23-26
1: Thompson, Annapolis, Md., Nov 10-11
1: Miami OCR / Yngling Mid-Winters, Jan 29 - Feb 2
2) REVISED QUOTAS
No significant change made, other than removing limit on fleet size.
3) CURRENT QUALIFIERS
As of now, these skippers have qualified (from each regatta):
Becker-Dey (NAs)
Swanson (NAs)
Alison (NAs)
Rumbles (Great Lakes)
Cronin (CORK)
Swett (Thompson)
Chafee (Miami OCR)
4) ATTENDING / NOT ATTENDING
If you can or will not attend the Worlds, the USA will likely find someone else to GLADLY fill your spot, so please alert Bruce as soon as possible of your plans (even tentative) not to attend. On behalf of the lucky one who would take your spot, thank you very much!
